Maternal iron deficiency, anaemia and common mental disorders (CMD) have adverse consequences on subsequent infant motor development, a new study in Vietnam indicates. The findings highlight the need to improve the quality of antenatal care for pregnant women in low- and middle-income countries.

Gastric interleukin-1β concentration is an independent predictor for iron deficiency in Helicobacter pylori-infected children, a recent study indicates.

Both haemoglobin and serum ferritin concentration – markers of depletion of iron stores and iron deficiency – were shown to negatively correlate with gastric interleukin-1β concentration in this paediatric patient population. This could be important for identifying H. pylori-infected children that are iron deficient before symptoms become severe.
